TOP 10 of INdian Cinema
In a survey to judge the best of Indian Cinema in the year 2019, the IFI requested 09 eminent Film Critics of India to recommend their choice of top 10 Indian films and top three performances by an actor male and female in order of preference. The choices listed by the Critics were given marks by IFI e.g. the film rated by the Critic as No. 1 got 10 marks while the one placed at No. 10 got 01 marks. A similar formula was applied to the Performances by the Actors as well. The objective was to create a country-wide consensus on the Best of Indian Cinema which has largely been achieved if one goes by the Final List. The Final results are as under:

The survey invited top 09 Film Critics of the country through a rating mechanism where a film rated by the Critic at No. 1 spot got 10 marks while the one placed at No. 10 got 01 mark and so on. The Critics who participated in the Survey included Swapan Mullick, Bharadwaj Rangan, Utpal Datta, Tanul Thakur, Murtaza Ali Khan, Sachin Chate, Siraj Syed, Chandi Mukherjee and MK Raghavendra.
Participating Film Critics
Baradwaj Rangan is an Indian film critic, writer, and formerly the deputy editor of The Hindu. He later became a senior editor of Film Companion. He won the National Film Award for Best Film Critic in 2006. He has also authored two books, worked as a screenwriter, and is a teacher at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.
Utpal Datta is a National Film Award-winning film critic. He has been associated with different magazines such as Bismoi, Rangghar, Roopkar. He is known primarily for his books, plays and radio shows. He has now directed an impressionistic 10-minute short film, “By-lane 2”, which is his first ever independent work as a director. The film is based on the works of Pabitra Kumar Deka.
Tanul Thakur is a National Award-winning film critic and journalist. A film critic for The Wire, he has written reviews, features and opinion pieces for, among other publications such as The Caravan, Mint, GQ, Yahoo! India, etc. His pieces and opinions on cinema, film criticism, and writing have been syndicated, quoted, and republished in The Times, Financial Times, Le Monde, Forbes, BBC News, Huffington Post, CNN and more.
Murtaza Ali Khan is a film critic / journalist based out of Delhi, India. He is a regular contributor to The Hindu, The Sunday Guardian, Newslaundry, etc. He has been a guest panelist on various television channels and also associated with radio. He also conducts workshops on screenwriting, film appreciation and digital filmmaking.
Swapan Mullick is a veteran journalist and film critic who was the first recipient of the National Award for Best Film Critic in 1985. He has been associated with The Statesman in a senior editorial capacity for more than three decades and was subsequently appointed Director of the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata. He continues to write columns for newspapers, has authored several books, lectures on cinema, serves frequently on film juries in India and abroad.
Sachin Chate has been writing on cinema for 24 years. A Computer Technology graduate, he started writing for The Hitavada in Nagpur and after moving to Goa, he has been writing a weekly column for The Navhind Times, Goa. He has contributed to various magazines and national dailies and served on the Indian Panorama Jury at IFFI, 2017. He also teaches Film Appreciation in Goa. Sachin is also a radio jockey with All India Radio’s FM Rainbow since 1998.
Prof. Siraj Syed is an actor, broadcaster, film critic and lecturer. He is also a member of FIPRESCI the International Federation of Film Critics, Germany and pens his blog http://www.filmfestivals.com/blog/siraj_syed.
M.K. RAGHAVENDRA is a film critic, researcher, author and a founder-editor of the film journal Deep Focus. He received the National Award for the best film critic in 1997. He was awarded a two-year Homi Bhabha Fellowship in 2000-01 to research Indian popular film narrative and a Goethe Institut Fellowship in 2000 to study post-War German cinema.
Chandi Mukherjee has been a film critic with the National daily Vartaman, for over 30 years and has also served on the National Film Awards Jury, 2006.
